5. Calcium

Calcium is needed for good bone growth and strong teeth.

Milk and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt are the best sources and the most easily absorbed by the body.

Fortified soy milk is a good source of calcium; unfortified soy milk has very little.

Calcium is also found in the following foods but in much lesser quantities than in milk or dairy products:

• broccoli

• brussels sprouts (mash bones well)

• canned fish with bones

• nuts and seeds, but whole nuts should never be given to toddlers, nuts and seeds need to be offered in a paste form (e.g., tahini, smooth peanut butter, almond paste).

• oranges

• baked beans

• legumes

• tofu
